Not sure how I made this happen, but I managed to mark off a meal out also during work time! On Friday, I went out for lunch with my colleagues at Zao, a Chinese restaurant right next to Carol Park. There’s a few other restaurants close by, like Le Papile, also on my list.
Beginning of January, I changed jobs, and, believe it or not, this was the first time I actually managed to go out for lunch with my colleagues. I had a pretty hectic beginning of year and it’s only now that things are starting to be a bit more normal. But I’m glad that this is happening as the weather is getting warmer.
"I liked the place, it has some bamboo trunks as decoration, some ceramic plates on the walls and wooden dragons."
So, as I was saying, I went for lunch with Robert, Any, Veronica, Delia, Andi, Adina, Sorana, Flavia and Alex. Quite a gang, so I can’t present every one in particular. Oh, I think Adina you know from previous reviews.
So we picked a spot outside, on the terrace, and sat around a big table. I also went in, to check out how the inside looks like. I liked the place, it has some bamboo trunks as decoration, some ceramic plates on the walls and wooden dragons. Also, the lady who was our waitress was really nice.
"I didn’t like the dumplings, nor the fries."
I ordered some fried dumplings (12 lei) and some garlic fries (18 lei) which I split with Flavia. I knew I would also taste from other’s plates as well. Other stuff that was ordered at our table: ‘numb’ beef (33 lei), 5 spices beef (30 lei), veggie noodles (18 lei), spicy rice (10 lei), garlic mushrooms (22 lei) and some others.
I didn’t like the dumplings, nor the fries. The dumplings had a pretty good filling, but the outside dough was very tough and chewy. And the fries were super drenched in oil. Maybe otherwise they would have been good, but it was like you were eating oil, not fries. Andi said he wouldn’t give an ‘unimpressed’ to the place and that he liked the fries the way they were. But Andi, as Robert said, is not very picky with food, so much that he actually likes vinegar chips! Do you know anybody else who likes that?
"From what I tasted, I can say the ‘numb’ beef was by far the best choice. "
I asked around for other opinions and some were happy with their order, but not everyone. From what I tasted, I can say the ‘numb’ beef was by far the best choice. That’s what I would get if I ever got there again. The beef was very soft, tasty and flavorful.
Honestly, I didn’t expect not to like Zao. I know Bianca and Musi were thrilled by this place. Who knows, maybe I caught them in a bad day.
