JICKY CUISINE: a place with big plans

Oh, how I wish I liked Jicky Cuisine! But - spoiler alert - it didn’t happen. I put it on my list a long time ago and I went there with Vlad on a weekend. They had this event on Facebook, Eggs-travaganza, and everything I read on the menu sounded good to me.

The restaurant is on Grigore Alexandrescu, next to La Finca by Alioli. It is very nicely decorated. They have a thing for flamingos. Everywhere you look, flamingos. Painted flamingos, flamingo statues, flamingos in the menu. Not literally, but there’s pink everywhere. In a good way. I think this is a restaurant opened having in mind the people who are working in the area. That’s why they have a rather short schedule.

I wanted to get a Croque Madame (19 lei). They didn’t have any. Ok, let’s try the quiche with tomatoes and nettle puree (20 lei). Yum, right? It wasn’t ready, even though we were approaching lunch… I finally decide on the burger with ewe-cheese, celandine, wasabi mayo, sun-dried tomatoes and green onion coulis (34 lei). It all sounded so good! Vlad took a simpler approach, he wanted eggs Benedict Jicky style (18 lei). We thought about being a bit opulent and try the red caviar & Boutarga (50 lei), from Corsica. But they didn’t have those either. Pretty frustrating to order three kinds of dishes and finding out they don’t have it, for various reasons.

The owner was there and she came to meet us and to apologize personally for the lack of caviar. This was nice. She told us that they weren’t expecting to have such a huge success and run on empty. It seems they have someone that brings them caviar from Corsica. Uuu… I would have liked to taste it, what can I say? It’s worth mentioning that the rest of the employees were also very nice. But things moved very slowly. Even though we were some of the few clients, the food took a long time to be ready.

I had such high hopes with the burger, but it goes right into the worst burgers I’ve eaten top. The meat was very dry and the bun was choked with oil. It felt like eating oil. I was disappointed, because it sounded really good in theory.

The eggs Benedict looked special. They had this pink sauce, that matched the flamingos. And Vlad said that they were really good. I rarely eat eggs Benedict, but I do know how they’re supposed to be: the yolk should be soft. And when you cut it, it should spread on the bread like a delicious sauce. From what I’ve seen, the eggs were hard. So they weren’t made with skill.

I’m hoping they’ll make some fine tunings with the food, because I like the fact that they come up with fresh things. And I’m also hoping that they actually have it, from now on. Please try the caviar if you get there and do tell me how it was. :)
