BITE: overrated brunch joint

I kept seeing Facebook posts and Instastories with Bite, it seemed like a lot of my friends were going for brunch there. Well, the pictures and clips seemed veeery persuasive, so I thought, if everybody is going there, it should be good, right? Wrong!

So, I went there, an unsuspecting customer. And the place is indeed very nice looking. I know minimalism is trending now, but Bite takes it to the next level. The only element that they play with is the wallpaper, which makes you feel like in a botanical garden or a jungle. Apart from that, just tables and chairs, very simple. It’s a nice place to work from, I think, it seems pretty quiet and it’s very spacious.

"I thought that if everybody is going there, it should be good, right? Wrong!"

I wasn’t very hungry, so I decided to just get an avocado toast with cheese (17 lei). It was ok. To be honest, I think it’s pretty hard to fail at something so simple. But apart from that, everything was a disaster. I was there with a group of girlfriends, all coming for brunch, and we ordered the following: sweet potato fries (16 lei), beetroot and hummus bowl (32 lei), chicken breast cooked in coconut milk (30 lei) and avocado with a poached egg (19 lei).

Let me take them one at a time. The sweet potatoes were cut so thinly they were like potato splinters. And I think the serving is like half a potato. The beetroot and hummus bowl was good, but had way too many salad leafs compared to the other ingredients. The chicken tasted ok, but part of it was not cooked through. And the poached egg was too overdone.

"The sweet potatoes were cut so thinly they were like potato splinters. And I think the serving is like half a potato."

We talked to the guy serving us and gave him feedback about the half cooked chicken and the overdone egg. He seemed a bit timid, but said that he’s going to send this message to the chef. And at the end we had a nice surprise, the chicken was not on the bill.

So this was my first experience with Bite. And when I think I feel for the social media trap… Everybody who takes a selfie there or checks in to the place is promoting it. But the food comes second. Nobody told me that the food isn’t good. Or maybe they like it?

And what’s funny is that, after this experience, I went there again. I was making plans with some friends to grab a bite to eat and they mentioned Bite. I said ok, maybe they like it there, I’ll give it another chance.

"The only good thing about Bite is the wallpaper. Which I forgot to take a picture of. Not sure if I’ll come back only for that though."

When we got there, we realised that they had actually never been there themselves. I told them about my first experience and hoped that it was just a onetime thing. But, sadly, nobody was happy with their food again. And one more important thing - the coffee wasn’t very good either. So, the only good thing about Bite is the wallpaper. Which I forgot to take a picture of. Not sure if I’ll come back only for that though.
