AUBERGINE: eggplants with eggplants and other goodies

Here's another restaurant I passed by many times before entering and sitting at the table. This one is also in the Old City. How did I dropped by just now?  I admit, it was not my first option. I wanted to reserve a 4 person table to get out with Eugen and Simona. We tried 3 or 4 places before Simona suggested Aubergine. Spot on! I wanted to get there for a long time.

Simona and Eugen are an advertising power couple with whom we get to meet pretty rarely.  Let me get a bit into details, for the curious ones. Eugen is one of the longest standing friends of Vlad. When I met them, they were working and living together. I met Simona a little bit later at another job. After some time, Eugen and Simona became “The Sumans”. Unfortunately, the last time we managed to see each other was in January.

As we arrived upstairs I realized that I recognize the interior from somewhere... The walls are decorated with old doors of different colors on which you can see the passage of time. An unusual decor, that’s why I remembered it. I realized that I know it from the internet. A few years back there was another restaurant in this place and I entered the site and looked through the menu. I don’t remember its name. It’s  interesting that they kept the decor.

At Aubergine the menu is on a tablet – from a completely different movie as that of the decor.  I would understand the tablet if I could order directly from it. As it is, it seems to me that you want technology, but that’s not technology.

The interactions with the waiter were kind of weird. From the very beginning. Simona didn’t find wine by the glass in the menu and the waiter asked her,  if she got tired of scrolling up to the end trying to make a joke. What can I sense of humour is subjective.

But going back to our eggplants, I ordered a mixed plate - Chef’s specialty (40 lei), Simona got falafel in three colors (26 lei) and special mushrooms (27 lei) and Vlad wanted veal sirloin with pepper sauce (76 lei). Eugen only ate desert  -  cheesecake (19 lei).  

Through all these dishes we had time to talk about future plans, stuff about work, TV shows, vacations and others. We got up to date with one another. :)

Honestly, I liked the food very much. I didn't expect it. The menu is really varied and they have a lot of eggplant dishes, of course. Vegetarians really have a choice! I like the eggplant theme. Next time I’ll get something with more eggplant. My little mixed plate had everything: eggplant, humus, liver pate, mushrooms. Very good and big enough, it is easily suitable for 2 persons. The falafel and the mushrooms were good as well, but I think I mostly liked the veal. On the other hand, the cheesecake was the  least I liked. Actually, the waiter is what I liked the least. And I would have given impressed, but I can’t. The service was slow. We wanted to order drinks, to keep consuming but he brought a glass of wine after fifteen minutes.

But all in all, the food is worth it!
